Roof replacement in North Alabama

Full tear-off to the deck, inspection and repair of the wood underneath, then a complete new roof: underlayment, flashing, pipe boots, shingles and ventilation.

Quick answer

A proper roof replacement in North Alabama removes everything down to the deck, replaces any soft wood, then installs new underlayment, edge metal, flashing, pipe boots, shingles and ridge ventilation. Most homes take one to three days. The ACM Pros never quote layovers, and we show you photos of any rotted decking before we price it.

The details

Who it suits

Roofs at the end of their service life, roofs with widespread storm damage, and any roof where repairs have stopped holding.

Tear-off, always

We do not quote layovers. Putting new shingles over the old layer hides the deck, and you cannot inspect what you cannot see. The new roof inherits every defect underneath it, and the whole roof ages faster.

If a competing quote is much cheaper, check whether it is a layover before assuming you found a bargain.

The sequence

Each step in this sequence is a place where a fast job saves an hour and the roof pays for it later.

  • Tear off to the bare deck.
  • Check the sheathing and replace anything soft or delaminated, meaning its layers are coming apart. Re-nail sound boards where needed.
  • Lay synthetic underlayment across the roof, with self-sealing membrane in the valleys and other weak spots.
  • Install drip edge, valley metal, step flashing where the roof meets a wall, counter-flashing at brick, and new pipe boots.
  • Nail the shingles to spec in the nail zone, at the correct exposure.
  • Cut and install ridge ventilation as part of the roof.

Ventilation is part of the roof, not an extra

Attic heat in North Alabama is extreme, and it cooks shingles from underneath. Ridge exhaust matched to enough soffit intake is not an upgrade. It decides whether the roof reaches its rated life.

Exhaust without intake does very little, and mixing exhaust types can short-circuit the airflow entirely. We check the intake before we choose the exhaust.

Repair or replace?

Replacement is the right answer when granule loss or cracked shingle mats are widespread across several slopes. It is the wrong answer for wind damage in one spot or a single failed pipe boot. In those cases we quote the repair, even though the replacement invoice would be larger.

On the day

We protect your driveway and landscaping first, then start tear-off early so the deck is open in daylight. You see photos of any soft decking before we price it. Magnetic sweeps for nails run each evening and again at the finish.

What to check before you hire

  • Is it a full tear-off, or a layover?
  • Does the quote give a per-sheet rate for decking?
  • Are drip edge, flashing and new pipe boots listed?
  • Does it cover ventilation, both intake and exhaust?
  • Is the contractor licensed in Alabama and insured? Ours is license #307601.
  • Will they show you photos of any rotted wood before covering it?

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Roof size in squares, and pitch
  • Decking replaced once the old roof is off
  • Shingle line and impact rating
  • Flashing and metal replacement
  • Ventilation correction
  • Access and staging

How a job works

  1. Step 1: Free in-home estimate

We walk your exterior, measure, and show you the options. There is no charge and no pressure.

  2. Step 2: Choose your materials

You get a written scope with every line and material named. Then we order for your home.

  3. Step 3: Installed and cleaned up

Cut, fitted, trimmed, cleaned up and hauled away the same day. You never look at a pile of old frames.

Questions people ask

What does tear-off to the deck mean?

Everything comes off, down to the roof boards, so the deck can be checked and repaired before the new roof goes on. Layering new shingles over old hides whatever is underneath and shortens the life of both.

How long does a re-roof take?

Most single-family roofs take one to three days, depending on size, pitch and access. Weather sets the schedule more than the work does, and we never open more roof than we can dry in the same day.

Will you find decking that needs replacing?

Sometimes, and it is the main variable in the final number. We quote a rate per sheet up front so it is not a surprise, and we photograph anything we replace.

Why is roofing priced by the square?

A square is 100 square feet of roof surface, not floor area. Pitch matters because a steeper roof has more surface than its footprint suggests, and it is slower and less safe to work on.

Do I need new pipe boots if mine look fine?

Yes. The rubber dries and cracks with age, and a failed boot is the most common leak we are called out to. Replacing them costs almost nothing during a tear-off.

What happens if it rains during the job?

We watch the forecast and only open as much roof as we can dry in, meaning sealed with underlayment, the same day. If weather moves in, the roof is properly dried in rather than tarped.

Should I get impact-rated shingles?

They are tested to a higher impact rating and they cost more. Whether they pay back depends on how exposed your home is and on your insurance. We will price both so you can decide.

My neighbors are all getting new roofs. Should I check mine?

Probably. Many Huntsville and Madison roofs were replaced after the April 2011 storms and are now about fifteen years old, which is when wear starts to show in this heat. A check is worth it even if the roof looks fine from the ground.
