Questions and answers
- Will a house wash remove the black streaks on my roof? No, that is a separate job. Roofs need their own soft wash treatment for the organism that causes the streaks. We can do both on the same visit./services/pressure-washing/house-washing/
- Do the black streaks mean I need a new roof?Usually not. Streaks on their own mean the roof needs cleaning, not replacing. If the shingles are also curling, cracking or losing a lot of granules, that is a separate question, and we will tell you honestly which o.../blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Can I clean the black streaks off my roof myself? Not with a pressure washer, which is what most people reach for and what does the damage. Low-pressure chemical cleaning is the right method, but a wet roof is slippery and the solution can burn plants that are not pr.../blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Is the black streaking damaging my roof?It feeds on the limestone filler in the shingle, so it is not purely cosmetic, and it holds moisture against the surface. Neither is urgent, but neither is nothing./services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- What are the black streaks on my roof? They are a living growth that feeds on filler in the shingles, common on shaded north-facing slopes here. They do not mean the roof needs replacing. A low-pressure soft wash removes them safely, while pressure washing.../services/roofing/
- How often does a roof need soft washing in North Alabama? There is no fixed schedule. An open roof with good sun can go a long time, while a north slope under mature oaks may show growth again much sooner. We look at your roof's shade and orientation and tell you what to exp.../blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Why do the streaks only show on one side of my roof? The north side gets the least direct sun, so it stays damp longest after rain and dew. Trees that shade one slope have the same effect. The organism needs that lingering moisture, so the slope that dries slowest is wh.../blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Will a roof wash hurt my plants or grass? It should not. Soaking plants with plain water before cleaning, covering delicate ones and rinsing everything afterward is what protects them. When plants are damaged, it is because one of those steps was skipped./blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Does pressure washing damage a roof?Yes. It strips granules, and granules are the shingle's protection from the sun. They do not grow back, so a pressure-washed roof has a shorter life from that day, and the damage does not look like damage for two or t.../services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- How long before the black streaks come back?It depends on shade, tree cover and which way the roof faces. North-facing slopes under heavy trees grow back soonest. We will tell you what to expect for your roof rather than quote a blanket interval./services/pressure-washing/
- Is Gloeocapsa magma damaging my roof? Not quickly, and it will not cause a leak on its own. It keeps the shingle surface damp and draws minerals from the limestone filler, and it often brings moss and lichen with it, which can lift granules and shingle ed.../blog/black-streaks-on-roof/
- Do I need a new roof, or just a cleaning?Streaks alone do not mean you need a new roof. If the shingles are curling, cracking or shedding lots of granules, cleaning will not fix that. Because we do both roofing and roof washing, we can tell you honestly whic.../services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- Can I clean my roof myself? Not with a pressure washer, which is what most people reach for and what does the damage. Low-pressure cleaning with the right solution is the correct method, and working on a roof carries its own risks./services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- Can you wash the house at the same time?Yes. Many homeowners have the roof and walls soft washed on the same visit, and the driveway pressure washed at the end./services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- Will roof cleaning void my shingle warranty?Pressure washing can. Low-pressure cleaning with a solution is the method shingle makers and the industry's own guidance point to, and it is the only method we use on shingles./services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- How long does a soft-washed roof stay clean?Typically several years, because the growth is killed at the root rather than removed from the surface. Shaded north-facing slopes grow back first, which is also where the staining started./services/pressure-washing/roof-washing/
- Will pressure washing damage my roof?Pressure washing will. That is exactly why we do not do it. Asphalt shingles are cleaned with a soft wash, low pressure and the right solution. If anyone proposes putting real pressure on your shingles, that is a reas.../services/pressure-washing/
- Is soft washing safe on a roof?Yes. It is the only method that is. Shingle makers and the roofing industry's own cleaning guidance point to low-pressure cleaning with a solution rather than pressure, and we put no pressure on shingles at any point./services/pressure-washing/soft-washing/
- Can you wash my roof, house and driveway on the same visit?Yes. Many jobs combine all three. Each surface still gets its own method, so the visit takes a little longer than a one-setting job, and the results last longer too./services/pressure-washing/
- Should I wash my roof or replace it?Black streaks are usually a cleaning job, not a roofing job. A soft wash removes the growth without harming the shingles. We will tell you if the roof itself needs work./service-areas/harvest/
- Should a shingle roof ever be pressure washed? No. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association advises against using a power washer to clean algae from asphalt roofing, because pressure and scrubbing can strip the protective granules. Shingle roofs should be cle.../blog/soft-washing-vs-pressure-washing/
- How often will my lakeside roof need washing?More often than an inland one. Humidity off the water gives the algae better conditions, so regrowth comes back sooner. We will give you a realistic expectation for your roof./service-areas/marshall-county/
- Why does growth come back so fast after pressure washing?Because pressure removes the visible layer and leaves the living roots behind. In our warm, humid climate, they grow back quickly. A soft wash kills the colony, so it takes much longer to return./services/pressure-washing/soft-washing/
- What is the difference between soft washing and pressure washing?Soft washing uses a cleaning solution at about garden-hose pressure to kill growth, then rinses it away. Pressure washing uses high-pressure water to remove dirt by force. Soft washing is for roofs, siding and painted.../services/pressure-washing/
- How long does soft washing last?On a roof, typically several years, because the growth is killed rather than just removed. Pressure washing the same roof buys you a season and costs you granules. Shaded north-facing slopes grow back soonest./services/pressure-washing/soft-washing/
- How do I know if my roof has hail damage? From the ground you generally cannot. Hail bruising and granule loss rarely show from the yard. We inspect the roof and document what we find with dated photos./services/roofing/
- How long does a new roof take? Most single-family roofs take one to three days, depending on size, pitch and access. Weather sets the schedule more than the work does, and we never open more roof than we can dry in the same day./services/roofing/
