The ACM Pros Exteriors

Patio and Sliding Doors

Large exterior glass doors, either sliding panels or a hinged French pair, that connect your living space to a deck, patio or yard.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

How it opens

Quick answer

A patio door is a large exterior glass door, usually a sliding glass door or a hinged French pair, that opens onto a deck, patio or yard. A slider costs less, needs no swing space and gives more glass, while a hinged pair seals better and opens wider. In North Alabama the floor-level track and the threshold need the most care, because they collect grit and water.

The details

Who it suits

Rear walls of the house, and any opening where you want the glass area more than you want a door that swings. Sliders suit tight decks and patios, because they take no floor space to open.

How it compares

Sliders take no floor space and suit tight patios. Hinged French pairs seal better and look better open, but need clear space for the doors to swing.

Before replacing a sticking slider, ask about a track cleaning and new rollers. More often than people expect, that fixes it for a fraction of the cost.

In this climate

A patio door is the largest opening in most houses and the one with the most foot traffic, so the track takes both weather and grit. Here, sliders fill with the same pollen and debris that clog a sliding window, except the track sits at floor level where it also collects whatever gets walked through.

The threshold is the other pressure point. It sits at or near ground level, so how water is handled there is the difference between a door that lasts and one that quietly rots the floor framing beneath it.

Repair or replace?

A slider that is hard to move usually has a dirty track and worn rollers. Cleaning and new rollers cost a fraction of a new door, and we check that first.

If the frame is racked, meaning pushed out of square, if the glass has fogged between the panes, or if the threshold is soft, replacement is the honest answer.

Choosing the right glass and size

Patio doors are mostly glass, so the glass package does most of the work. Low-E glass, which has a thin, invisible coating that reflects heat, is the practical baseline in this climate, and the coating can be chosen for how much afternoon sun the door gets.

On a wide opening, more panels give more glass and a wider view, while a two-panel door keeps it simple. On an exposed wall, ask about impact-rated glass, since hail is a real risk here.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Opening width and panel count
  • Slider versus hinged
  • Roller or hinge grade
  • Glass package
  • Whether the opening is being enlarged

Questions people ask

Sliding or hinged French for a patio?

Sliding costs less, needs no swing space and gives more glass for the opening. Hinged French gives a wider clear opening when both doors are open and seals better, because it presses against the frame rather than sliding. Clearance usually decides it.

Does the track need much upkeep?

More than you would expect at floor level in this region. Keep it clear and the rollers will last. Let it pack with grit and the door gets heavy, which is the complaint we are usually called about.

Can a patio door meet egress?

Yes, easily. Egress means an opening large enough to get out of in an emergency, and a patio door's clear opening is far larger than any code minimum. That makes it a useful answer on a basement wall where a window would be marginal.

Can you fix my sticking slider instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. A track cleaning and new rollers fix most hard-to-slide doors for a fraction of the cost of a new unit. We look at that first and will tell you if that is all it needs.

Can I swap my sliding door for French doors?

Often, if there is room for the doors to swing. A hinged pair needs clear space the full width of each door on whichever side it opens toward. If the new pair fits the existing opening it is a straight swap, and if not, that is decided at measuring.

Why does water come in under my patio door?

Usually because the threshold was set without a sloped sill pan, or the flashing was lapped the wrong way. Water that gets under the threshold has nowhere to drain, so it soaks into the framing. Every exterior door we set gets a sealed sill pan with end dams, so water drains back out.

Do you install interior doors?

No. We install exterior doors only: entry, patio, exterior French and storm doors. We do not install interior doors, including interior sliding or closet doors, and we do not do any work inside the house.
